Each One Teach One is a student-to-student summer tutoring program coordinated by a group of self-motivated local high school students. The goal is for high school students to support younger deserving students once each week (Sunday mornings) at the Aspen Drive Library. The District 128 Foundation for Learning invites runners and walkers to take part in the 2nd Annual Lace Up 4 Learning on Monday, May 28 beginning at 8 a.m. at the Old School Forest Preserve, Libertyville. Race proceeds benefit the Foundations efforts to enrich the learning experiences and programs for students in Community High School District 128 (VHHS and LHS). Loyola University Chicago School of Education’s CPELL (Chicagoland Partners for English Language Learners) team is pleased to announce that Loyola University Chicago has been awarded the National Professional Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Education, awarded on May 1, 2012. As a CPELL partner, Loyola will reach out to Hawthorn 73 to plan and implement the university certification/degree offerings, professional development and parent programming as agreed upon in our letter of cooperation, which focuses on support for English language learners. As part of the CPELL grant, Loyola plans to begin the first graduate education cohort from the 7 CPELL partner school districts in Fall 2012. The CPELL grant pays for 50% of Loyola tuition for either the English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement Graduate Program and/or the Masters (M.Ed.) in English Language Teaching and Learning degree program. Our friends at the local VFW Post dropped off information about next fall’s Patriot’s Pen writing contest, which is open to students in grades 6, 7 and 8 (as of next fall). The essay topic is “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers.” Essays are to be 300 to 400 words in length, and are due November 1, 2012.
